This clever number prediction with dice has a tremendous effect on any audience. There just does not seem to be any rational explanation of how you are able to do this without being able to read minds. It is a real baffler!
How It Looks To The Audience
The Magician turns his back and tells a spectator to roll three dice on the table. He is then told to form the three dice into a stack, one on top of the other.
He is then instructed to add together the numbers of the two faces that are touching on top and middle dice.
To this number, he is then told to add the sum of the two faces that are touching on the bottom and middle dice.
Finally, he is asked to add the number on the bottom of the lower die to his previous total.
He is asked to remember that number, or write it down, and cover the stack of dice with cup or a piece of paper.
The Magician then turns round and takes some matches out of his pocket.
When the spectator counts the matches, he is amazed to find they add up to the same number as the total he is thinking of!
How The Trick Is Done
You prepare for the trick by having twenty-one matches in your pocket.
After the spectator has confirmed that he has added up all the faces, you casually look back over your shoulder and tell him to cover the stack with a cup or piece of paper.
As you do this, you sneak a peek at the number on the top die and remember it. For example, let us say it is a five.
With your hand inside your pocket, you pick up all the matches but allow five to drop, one by one one, back into your pocket.
You then take your hand out of your pocket and ask the spectator to count the matches.
He will be amazed to find they add up to the number he is thinking of!
So, just to reiterate, whatever number you see on the top die, that is the number of matches you must drop back into your pocket.
You will find it easy to count the matches as you are dropping them one by one.
